Propolis, also known as “bee glue”, is a resinous mixture that honey bees produce by mixing saliva and beeswax gathered from tree buds, sap flows and other botanical sources. It is used as a sealant for unwanted open spaces in the hive and functions as a natural disinfectant against bacteria, to maintain its integrity, to be immune to disease and defend against intruders. Researchers have identified more than 300 compounds in propolis of which the majority are forms of polyphenols.
